I ordered this item direct from JHM as, even with the addition of $65 carriage, it was still considerably cheaper than buying here in the UK. To my delight the shifter arrived 2 working days later. However, there was no grease or selection of shims in the package. The large shim supplied was a perfect fit and the shifter was already greased (I had to grease the Delrin bushes) so this was not an issue, but it was stated in the video and in literature that these items would be present.
I had the earlier metal base on my S4 so needed to buy the upgraded OEM plastic base. I sourced this in the UK for £30 incl vat rather than the $65 JHM were asking. The large circlip (snap ring) that holds the shifter in place off my original metal base was not compatable with the new plastic base so I had to source a new one. I contacted JHM customer services asking them to advise me of the size. I received the following reply "I don’t have the dimensions off hand, but it is the OEM snap ring from the B5 S4 late, and you should be able to get it from your local dealer relatively cheap". Personally, I felt this was poor customer service. Like most of us I don't want to buy parts from the Audi Stealership I wanted to know the exact size so I could purchase the right item else where to fit my 'precision engineered piece'. Not a big issue, but annoying. After a little head scratching, measurement and internet research I managed to find a supplier who would sell me 2 circlips rather than 200.
I found the video assembly guide to be excellent. Removal of the original shifter took some time, mainly down to different size bolts/screws than those stated in the video and Audi build quality. Some of those bolts were torqued down very tight! Fitting of the JHM shifter was easy. The whole operation probably took about 3 hours.
Setting adjustment was a little tricky but not difficult. I was a little out the first time (done with an adjustable spirit level) and then readjusted after first road test to achieve a much better result. I have ordered a digital inclinometer off Ebay (£23) and will adjust again once I receive it.
The shifter has transformed the feel of the car, dialling out nearly all of the 'sloop' in the drivetrain. So much so that I am questioning the need to fit Apikol mounts and bushes. I will of course fit these eventually. The physical feel of the gear change is also much improved being very precise and slick. There is a little mechanical noise as I move the shifter but I am hopeful that this will also disappear once I get the adjustment spot on.
To summarise this is a well engineered piece of kit that transforms the feel of an S4, removing the majority of the slack in the drivetrain. Highly recommended. (Posted on 8/22/2014) - Works, fits and looks great. I did not have an angle finder so I just tightened it far left and down and slowly bolted then unbolted repeatedly making minor adjustments until all gears were engaged. (Posted on 2/27/2014)
- This short shifter is great. very well built. very easy to install. takes about 10-15minutes mattering how quick you are with tools. They also have a video online that shows you how to remove the old shifter & install the new one step by step for beginners or if you just don't know the vehicle. i happened to get it with the JHM trio package which i highly recommend also! you feel every shift & it sounds pretty nice too.
