I recently installed the JHM short-shifter assembly for the B5/B6 chassis A4 vehicles. This is a very nice product that is complete and their "how-to" videos on Youtube are very helpful during installation.
In my case, none of the factory parts were retained since I have a pre-facelift car and the shifter mechanism is totally different. The JHM kit encompasses everything you will need for pre- and post-facelift vehicles. The new shifter-base with rods is a nice quality part (should be, since it appears OEM) and is the updated setup with no push-down reverse. Some people may like this, others may not. I have no issue with it since you can't get into reverse without first being in neutral.
Install was pretty smooth thanks in part to the "how-to" video and adjustment was pretty easy as well. I've only driven around with it for a couple days, but I like it a lot. This has what I would call an OEM+ type feel to it as if it were something developed by Audi to be sold as a dealer option. The throw is definitely shorter and thanks to the stock height the shifter is comfortable to use in an every-day application. Shifting through the gears is pretty smooth and it isn't really notchy, like some setups can be.
Overall I'm very satisfied with the purchase and would recommend it to any customer who wants a short-shifter for their A4.
- Some of the factory hardware JHM indicates should be there is different. I suspect this has a lot to do with my car being a VERY early 1998 model (so early in fact that according to Audi the car is actually a 1997 model). People should contact me with questions regarding this.
- The extensions JHM shows in their video are VERY helpful and I would strongly recommend people use them.
- You may need a 5mm hex-head socket/tool instead of the torx and my car also had some 13mm nuts instead of 10mm.
- Be prepared with a new dust-shield if your car is older like mine as the foam will likely disintegrate when you remove it from the car due to age. Review by Samuel (Posted on 11/6/2012)
